A 31-storey skyscraper will be built in Islington after a Dutch firm planning the building was given the all-clear by the council.

Construction on the residential tower block at 259 City Road Basin is expected to start later this year and will include 190 flats, a shop on the ground floor and a restaurant.

The building is designed by Amsterdam-based building company UNStudio and British firm PLP Architecture.

Araf Lahhan, a partner for Orion Capital Managers UK, which owns £150m plot on City Road, promised that the finished tower will be a “landmark” for Islington and a “highlight” of the wider regeneration of the canal basin.
