Apple unveiled a brand new iPad to a packed audience in Islington on Wednesday night.
The event was streamed exclusively in Islington to the Kings Place complex in King’s Cross from Apple’s headquarters in California.
More than 200 media and technology journalists attended on Wednesday night, when Apple unveiled the new iPad, which features 4G – a high-speed mobile internet network.
Network provider O2 is currently running a 4G trial across central London, including parts of Islington. O2 said the new Apple tablet will not be able to use the current trial, set to run until June this year, but the full network will be up and running in the UK by the end of 2013.
The trial sees speeds for data on mobile networks, used for accessing internet services by many smartphone apps, up to six times faster than current speeds.
The brand new device sports a revamped processing system and a high-definition “retina” display – the sharpest screen ever seen in a mobile device.
It is available for pre-order now, and will be in shops from March 16.
The device is pioneering what Apple called a “post PC world”.
They sold more than 15.4 million iPads in the last three months of 2011 alone, more than any single PC manufacturer, and over 62 million iPods, iPads and iPhones in the same time.
On Twitter, Islington Now readers said they wouldn’t be scrambling to buy the new device. One user said: “Nothing stunning in the new iPad spec and 4G won’t be in the UK for a good while, so not rushing!”
Another reader, Helen Ireland, said the current stock is good enough: “We have one of each in house and iPad 2 is brilliant and good enough.”
Speaking on stage in California, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook, who took over from Steve Jobs when he stepped down due to ill health last year, said: “When we set out to create the iPad we set out to create not just a new product but a new category. In order to do that the iPad had to be the best device for doing some of the things that you do most often.”
