A university hall of residence in Islington was on fire this evening after a student burned their toast.
A first-floor flat in Liberty Court, Briset Street, Farringdon, was burnt out and fire crews were called to the area. A window in an adjacent room was smashed, possibly indicating an attempted escape.
A member of staff at Liberty Court said nobody was hurt and that the fire was caused by the burning toast.
“The fire engines were really quick in arriving. They came with ladders and a water hose, and soon there was water everywhere,” said a receptionist from an office opposite Liberty Court.
“The fire started at about 5.20pm but the firemen got here in about 5 minutes. The students all came outside in their pyjamas and flip flops but they’ve gone back in now.”
A fire service spokesperson said the blaze was put out promptly and is not being treated as suspicious.
