An online Christmas art auction showcasing a selection of Islington-inspired pieces by a group of artists with special educational needs has opened this month. From April to October 2020, the artists have been working on paintings that symbolise getting through the lockdowns in the borough.
The project by the St Peter’s based charity Islington Giving is in partnership with artists from Artbox London, a social enterprise that runs art workshops for people with learning disabilities. Another Islington-based enterprise, picture framer Darbyshire, donated frames to each of the 21 works presented at the auction.
Each piece of art on the charity auction’s web page is followed by a bio of its author and inspirational quotes.
“I feel I have full potential and many opportunities when I see people like and buy my art. I feel like an international artist and I call myself an artist,” said Hisba, an artist passionate about abstract art.
Lee, another Artbox London artist, said: “I couldn’t believe how much it was when I got my money when I sold my art. It was the first time I got paid – I couldn’t believe it. I thought no way would I get money and then I did. I feel fantastic and it gives me confidence!”
The Islington Giving Art Auction will last until the middle of December. Money raised for Islington Giving and Artbox London will go to groups supporting isolated locals in Islington and maintenance and development of services for artists with special needs.
