Mother’s Day is a time for relatives of all generations to gather to show appreciation for their mums, but following another lockdown, once again things could be different this Mother’s day.

But this doesn’t mean you can’t still spoil your mum on Sunday the 14th – Islington Now has compiled a list of ways to show how much you appreciate her from the comfort of your own home.

Whether its flowers or a Skype/Zoom call, be sure to mark the special occasion a global pandemic is no excuse to forgo Mothering Sunday:

1. Send her some flowers

You’re not the only one stuck indoors at the moment and your mum will appreciate a lift to her home environment; brightly coloured flowers and plants are sure to perk up the household. Angel flowers on Upper Street have beautiful flowers specially designed for Mother’s Day and can even deliver the same day to addresses in London.

2. Organise an online lunch

Mother’s Day is often a time to give everyone a break from the kitchen and celebrate with a meal out. But with the government advising against restaurants and pubs, it pays to get a bit creative with communal dining. Why not try setting up a Skype or a Zoom conference call so that you can all still eat together? Even better, try getting the same takeaway as the rest of the family Islington’s restaurants are all still offering food to take home, and services like Deliveroo are alive and kicking.

3. Send her a book

What better way for your mum to pass the hours when in lockdown? Most book delivery services are still running as normal and are on the hunt for customers. Keep an eye out for local independent bookshops as many in the city are offering book recommendations and delivery services to make sure you get the perfect fit.

4. Make her a playlist

One thoughtful way to show your mum that you’re thinking about her is to make a playlist with some of her favourite songs to keep her cruising through self-isolation. Create them on Spotify to share them easily with the whole family, or go retro and make a CD or tape for her to enjoy through the long quarantine afternoons.

5. Give a gift card

If you really can’t give up your usual Mother’s Day indulgences, just postpone them. Local restaurants and gift shops will be really suffering with everyone staying indoors, so see if they offer gift cards to give your mum this Sunday. That way you can stay safe indoors and give local businesses the support they so desperately need — all while making sure your mother gets the treatment she deserves, even if it’s not on this coming Sunday.
