Easter celebrations came early for a Finsbury Park Church as campaigners and an Easter bunny celebrated the success of a year-long fundraising effort on Saturday.
A council grant and money from the Congregational Federation helped St Mellitus Catholic Church on Tollington Park raise the £10,000 needed to build a disabled access lift in the Grade II listed building.
Bruce Kent, Vice President of Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, who has been a parishioner of the church since 1988, said: “At the moment access is impossible for disabled people. The support has been wonderful, and everything is ready to get started.”
Saturday’s spring fair, complete with a raffle, a jumble sale, local musicians and early Easter treats, tipped the fundraising kitty to its target and marked the final point in a fundraising drive, which has also included a Christmas concert by the London Medical Orchestra on their 50th Jubilee.
Tollington ward councillor Jean Roger Kaseki said: “I am very glad to see that this has materialised. Most disabled people were prevented from getting to the church and now it will be accessible to everyone. Other organisations will be able to use the facilities and benefit the whole community.”
