A day involving Zumba, a penalty shootout and a free health check, in order to raise awareness of health issues in Caledonian took place this weekend at Bingfield Street Surgery.
Despite a turnout of only 30, organisers hope that it will lead to more community exercise activities.
Dr Hannah Flinders, of Bingfield Street Surgery, said, “I hope we’ll inspire people in this locality to want to carry on doing these kind of activities and to see what fun it can be becoming more physically active.”
“I’d like the community to see the health centre as an integral part of the community and see health as an integral part of their lives.”
The health day was organised by More Life, a service aimed at tackling obesity. Other organisations, including Arsenal’s community engagement group and Caledonian community group Team Cally, were also involved.
Mohamed Hammoudan, Team Cally Neighbourhood Co-ordinator, praised the event but admitted that it was only the first step in dealing with health issues in Caledonian.
“In terms of preventative health measures, the ward is struggling to try and get people to pick up leaflets and be proactive about their own health,” he said.
“There is a huge amount of work that needs to be done to get people engaged and talking about health and thinking about the preventative measures people can take in their own homes.”
