An Olympic-themed quiz night raised over £2,000 for a community centre on Sunday.
The quiz was part of Highbury Roundhouse’s ongoing efforts to raise funds for a new building, following the closure of its central site two years ago. Named the Bottleworks, the converted Victorian industrial building had housed most of the Roundhouse’s regular events.
Since the Bottleworks’ closure, the Highbury Roundhouse has “continued to offer all our services, at five different sites,” quiz master Tony Millan told a full room at the Sotheby Mews Day Centre, where the event was held.
Highbury Roundhouse supports the Highbury East community, with a weekly programme of activities, including after-school clubs, music, crafts, martial arts, pilates, pensioners clubs and dance classes.
The new building will be constructed on the same site as the ‘Bottleworks’, on Ronald Road, where demolition of the original building is due to begin.
The quiz night featured eight rounds of questions, spanning the last century of the Olympics, and an auction which itself raised around £1,000 of the evening’s total £2,420. Top prizes were a week in a chalet in the French Alps, a football signed by the 2011-12 Arsenal team, and a Squier Fender Stratocaster guitar.
Millan, who is secretary of the Highbury Roundhouse, said he was pleased with the turnout for the event. Attendees included the ward’s councillors, John Gilbert, Julie Horten and Terry Stacy, whose team came third.
The winning team, which included Highbury Roundhouse chairman William Ellington and his wife Victoria, received gold medals for their efforts.
