A statue of early feminist writer Mary Wollstonecraft will be unveiled in Newington Green on 10 November.

The sculpture, designed by artist Maggi Hambling, is the result of a nine-year grassroots campaign by the Mary on the Green group. The campaign enjoys the support of high-profile individuals including Jeremy Corbyn.

“The memorial will be a tangible way to share Wollstonecraft’s vision and ideas,” states the Mary on the Green website.

Wollstonecraft, mother of Frankenstein author Mary Shelley, lived and worked in Newington Green in the late 18th century and is best known for her 1792 work “A Vindication of The Rights of Women”.

The campaign’s website also states:

“Her presence in a physical form will be an inspiration to local young people in Islington, Haringey and Hackney. And it will send a powerful message beyond that, across the world.”

The campaign, founded in 2011, has received over 5,500 signatures on an online petition. £143,300 has been raised to fund the statue.

Maggi Hambling’s design depicts a woman rising from a swirling grey mass and is inscribed with a Wollstonecraft quote:

“I do not wish women to have power over men, but over themselves.”
