Newington Green Meeting House, celebrated for its history of radical activism, will host a series of events in October oriented around Britain’s Black community.
The Black Exchange Initiative, the event organisers, said that “The Newington Takeover” intends to “open the conversation on the arts industry, representation, society’s misconceptions, the beauty of the African diaspora and the Black community.”
The Meeting House has built a reputation for activism since its founding in 1708, having been visited throughout its history by religious and political dissenters, including feminist writer and philosopher Mary Wollstonecraft. This tradition has continued into the modern day; in 2008 it became the first British church to boycott marriages until they were introduced for same-sex couples.
The Black Exchange Takeover will present a selection of short films followed by a directors’ Q&A on the 16th October and will conclude with an arts panel discussion on the 31st.
Owing to Coronavirus restrictions, live tickets are limited and the events will be available to watch online.
