Selfish and spoilt and with no one to play with, Mary Lennox sits on a bench in the middle of The Secret Garden, the latest drama to spring up in the King’s Head theatre pub on Upper Street.
10-year-old orphaned Mary is sent to live with her uncle Archibald. She discovers a secret garden, unearthing a family drama in the process.
The set consists of patches of astroturf lodged onto the stage wall and floors; Hawaiian-style garlands are blue-tacked across the set. The costumes dazzle, ranging from period drama frocks to modern day going out gear.
13-year-old Ana Martin, (Mary) gives a top-notch performance.
Alexander Evans (Archibald), steals the show. Playing such a misery guts is not easy but Evans pulls it off.
This musical version of the children’s classic is exactly what a family theatre trip ought to be: simple and highly enjoyable.
The Secret Garden is showing at The King’s Head Theatre on Upper Street until 17 March.
