An Islington man is being held in police custody after an attempted robbery was thwarted by a 70-year-old man.
The 32-year old is thought to be one of four men who raided Thurlow Champness jewellery store in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, early on Monday 28 February.
The men tried to run off with a bag of jewellery but were stopped by Michael, the pensioner, who came face to face with a man wielding a sledgehammer. He grabbed the loot and the men fled empty-handed.
Michael, who asked for his surname to be withheld, said: “I thought he was very young and it was a very inept robbery and not successful. I am quite pleased I did something positive.
“I have never done this before. I am not the sort of person who goes looking for trouble.”
