A man was taken to hospital after a fire in an old people’s home in Holloway on Saturday night. Around 30 people were evacuated after firemen rushed to the Brightwell Court care home in Mackenzie Road, Holloway after reports of smoke at around 6.30pm on Saturday evening.
It is believed that the fire broke out in one of the individual apartments on the second floor of the home. Five fire engines and 20 firemen arrived at the scene only minutes after receiving an emergency call at 6.35pm. The man was rushed to Whittington Hospital with suspected smoke poisoning and the rest of the residents were escorted outside by the firemen.
A spokesperson for the fire authorities said that the residents had only been outside in the cold for around half an hour before being allowed back into the communal area downstairs. He added that there was serious smoke damage inside the building. It is not yet known why the fire started.
