Stephen Moorby was unanimously elected chairman of Hilldrop Community Centre at the annual general meeting on October 15.
Moorby, a retired journalist, praised the work of the trustees and his predecessor Brian Bench, and pledged to give them his full support. “The reason I stand as a chair is to continue Brian’s work.”
Moorby, a St George’s resident for 20 years, said that he wants to give something back to the community now that he has retired. He sees it as his duty because other residents “are too busy with work and children.”
Former chair, Brian Bench said he was “delighted” with Moorby’s nomination. Bench has only relinquished his position due to a recent move to Essex.
St George’s councillor Satnam Gil, who attended the meeting, described Moorby as a “local man very committed to the centre.”
Annetta, a local resident was also satisfied with Moorby’s appointment: “he involves himself in the job, it’s not a simple gesture.”
The current trustees were confirmed in their position with the addition of Alem Aynalem. She said she wanted to serve the community and promote diversity at the Community Centre.
