The council has pledged to halve unemployment among young people in the borough within three years.
It has also announced plans for 300 new apprenticeships and promised that there will be no 16 to 18-year-olds not in education, employment or training (NEETS) by 2015.
The latest stats from the Office for National Statistics reveal that 7.6% of Islington’s 18-24 year olds are claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance, which is 0.8% lower than the national average of 8.4%, but 0.9% higher than borough figures released in February 2011.
Councillor Richard Watts said that the plans were realistic: “We will do everything within our grasp to improve the future of young people in Islington.
“The borough has suffered from massive government cuts, but we want to protect young people from them and help them to learn, achieve and succeed.”
