An Islington councillor has voiced her anger over plans to spend £100,000 refurbishing a local library.

Liberal Democrat Tracy Ismail is furious that the money was allocated to the John Barnes Library on Camden Road as part of the Ward Improvement Plan without her knowledge.

She said: “I don’t know where the improvement plans came from. I personally have never lobbied the council to spend money on the John Barnes Library and I have never been lobbied by residents to spend money on the library”.

While the funds can still be reallocated, Ismail maintains councillors in St. George’s ward were not aware that the proposal had been made.

“Why, in a time of cutbacks, are we considering spending £100,000 on improvements to a library?” Ismail said.

“Is there going to be a consultation with residents? Is there going to be some kind of feasibility study to see what this money is actually being spent on?”

Ms Ismail’s concerns are at odds with the comments of Eric Manners, an Environment and Regeneration Officer for Islington Council, who argued that the councillors accepted the proposals after they were put forward by the Libraries Services in July.

He said: “The ward councillors accepted the proposed allocation after some discussion around the fact that detailed plans for the expenditure are yet to be developed.”

Mr Manners conceded that the plans were not definite, and the Ward Improvement Plan now reads “Costs: TBC” on the council’s website
