Jeremy Corbyn has pledged to “keep his promises” to Islington and continue his weekly surgeries in his constituency.
The Labour Leader, who had just returned from Labour’s annual Party Conference in Brighton, pledged to remain a “local champion” as he visited the event at Islington Arts & Media School last Saturday, organised by the Tollington Ward Community Partnership.
“I represented this area first as a councillor, and then as an MP for 32 years. I’m going to keep the promises I’ve made to the people who live here”, said Mr Corbyn.
“People who live here are being in forced into horrible situations by this Conservative government, and I’m going to fight with them like I have down my whole life”, Mr Corbyn told Islington Now.
The Islington North MP conceded he was likely to face more pressure on his since his election as party leader, but assured constituents in Tollington that “systems are in place” to make sure he could continue to host his popular surgeries.
The Labour Leader was stopped regularly for selfies at the event held at Islington Arts & Media School.
But whilst many at the event were supportive of Mr Corbyn, some were concerned that leading his party would affect his work in the constituency.
Local resident Gemma Lovell shared her concerns, “It’s amazing that Jeremy managed to make it along today, especially after the week he’s just had, but I’m worried that he won’t be able to keep all these plates spinning. Surely eventually something’s got to give?”
Despite concerns, Mr Corbyn has said he’ll to keep to his relentless campaign schedule: “We’ve got elections across London, Scotland and Wales next May. In fact I’m visiting Scotland next week, but I’ll be back in time for my surgeries.”
