Freeling Street, off of Caledonian Road, is being transformed into a “pocket park” by Islington Play Association (IPA). Installations of grass, planters and shrubs over the tarmac will be completed in early 2021.
The IPA believes that “the project acts as a positive symbol to the people of the area, and for those that care about their community, change has begun.”
Local residents are being encouraged to submit their ideas and designs for the pocket park using a design tool on the Cultivating Cally website.
“It has never been more important for us all to think about our mental health and our connection with nature to support our wellbeing,” said Anita Grant, chief executive of the IPA.
She added, “children especially benefit from that connection and the ability for them to feel safe and happy in shared spaces and community areas has a massive impact on their happiness.”
The idea was inspired by the Cally Festival’s use of the space as a “pop-up park” in 2019.
This project marks the start of several plans for the area as the IPA is looking to provide similar green spaces to Bingfield Park, Thornhill Square and towards Kings Cross through the Bemerton Estate.
