Despite a £1.6m upgrade of escalators at Highbury and Islington station, one has broken down three times in as many months.

The faults left commuters with no option but to take the stairs, which Transport for London (TfL) acknowledges takes “up to 10 minutes” at peak times.

Improvements finished on “Escalator 1” in July, but since then it has been closed for TfL workers to remove an object that was jammed, to repair a chain wheel, and to adjust the handrails.

Mohamed, a customer service assistant at the station, said that the old escalators installed at the station take longer to repair than newer models because faulty parts cannot be removed.

But Dave, also a customer service assistant at the station, said: “The escalators always seem to be breaking down.”

TfL said that adding a third escalator is “not currently an option”.
