With rumours swirling as to whether Jeremy Corbyn will announce his intention to stand as an independent candidate to defend Islington North, the constituency he has represented since 1983, Islington Now took to the streets to speak to voters.
Corbyn was suspended from the Labour Party in October 2020, after he said that antisemitism in the Party under his leadership had been “dramatically overstated”.
Fast forward to March 2023, and Labour’s governing body, The National Executive Council (NEC), approved a motion from Keir Starmer to ban Corbyn from running as a Labour candidate. In a statement, Corbyn said: “The NEC’s decision to block my candidacy for Islington North is a shameful attack on party democracy, party members and natural justice.”
Islington North CLP (constituency Labour Party) rejected the “NEC’s undue interference in Islington North”, proposing that they should have control over their local selections.
Just shy of one year on, and with a general election on the horizon, Islington Now wanted to get a sense of whether local voters would support Corbyn if he ran as an independent.
