A Highbury school has found a way of making science cool – by demonstrating how to make ice cream with -196C liquid nitrogen.

Kids watched eagerly as chocolate chip ice cream was made in an instant by a UCL chemistry professor at Gillespie Primary School’s event celebrating their new science lab.

The school raised £50,000 to fund the laboratory, called Lab 13.

Schoolkids will use the lab to dissect hearts and lungs as well as building a 3D model from chocolate this year.

Headmaster Mark Owen said: “The celebration was fantastic today, and it was great for the children to see science in action. We got our message across to potential funders and it will help build be a strong partnership with parents.”

Beatboxer Vid Warren showed students what can be done with experimentation and practice by playing the harmonica and recorder while juggling – all at the same time.
