From a pioneer of cookery to the grandfather of modern electricity, Islington is celebrating its illustrious heritage by opening the People’s Plaque awards.
Voting is now open for people to elect the person, place or event they think has most shaped Islington’s history froCm a Green Plaque shortlist chosen by residents last year.
Places on the list include Wessex Sound Studios, 106A Highbury New Park. A music studio until 2003, it welcomed music greats like The Sex Pistols, Queen and The Rolling Stones. The Clash’s pivotal 1979 album London Calling, was also recorded here.
Also on the list is The Angel Inn on the corner of Islington High Street and Pentonville Road. Now the Cooperative Bank, it first opened its doors in the 15th century, features in the William Hogarth painting The Stage Coach, and gets a mention in Charles Dickens’ Sketches by Boz and Oliver Twist.
The People’s Plaque survey shortlist also includes suffragette and campaigner Catherine Griffiths, cook Isabella Beeton and fashion designer Alexander McQueen.
