Opponents of a proposed housing project have reacted after their protest banners were removed by Islington Council.
The campaign posters were situated opposite the planned site at Braithwaite House located, Bunhill Row.
Islington council have plans to build 44 new homes around Braithwaite House and Quaker Court, 25 will be new council homes. Local families are concerned they will lose their only amenity space.
Three weeks ago, a member from the Braithwaite House Tenant Management Organisation (BHTMO) attached four banners reading “Children need sunlight to grow” across the building.
Henry Howall, a resident from Braithwaite House said: “I don’t like changes, I love history. People who live here should have areas to relax and play, especially children.”
One member from the BHTMO who wished to remain anonymous accused the council of threatening legal action. Tenants were later able to retrieve the banners, but the situation has worsened already strained relations.
BHTMO started a change.org petition online 4 months ago in opposition to the development which has already gathered over 1,200 supporters.
According to BHTMO Acting Chair Elizabeth Hilliard, petition boards inside the building were removed by the Islington council last Thursday. The petition is designed to reflect BHTMO assessments of broad opposition among tenants.
The council did not choose to comment.
