The far-right English Defence League was prevented from staging a march in Islington last weekend after Policing Minister Damian Green granted the Met’s request for a banning order.

Authorities feared Finsbury Park could become a “target for disorder”, according to Cllr Paul Convery, especially with an Arsenal home match that day.

Labour and Lib Dem councillors issued a rare joint statement following the ban: “Islington’s strength is its diversity and this council is united in opposing the proposed English Defence League march.”
