A Monster Raving Loony Party election campaign has begun in Islington South and Finsbury, promoting policies including an educational curriculum comprised only of circus tricks, and a transport policy based on donkey carts.
However, the candidate, known as Lord Sandys of Bunhill, insists that he is running a serious campaign, also offering policies including capping prescription charges and building more zebra crossings, and wants to encourage scrutiny of politicians.
“It’s really important that people understand that it’s not just the Tories who support the millionaires. Emily Thornberry has a chequered past, and I want to expose the hypocrisy and shame-faced incompetency of her policies”, he said.
Lord Sandys, an Extinction Rebellion activist, will not be accepted as an official Parliamentary candidate until Friday, before raising the necessary £500 deposit and being confirmed by the party.
The former Green Party member admitted that his chances of toppling Thornberry, who has represented the area since 2005, were remote, but argued that the Monster Raving Loony Party was an important political forces their lack of presence in the House of Commons.
“Anything can happen, we all say that and I believe it. If you look at the role of the fool in King Lear, that’s the role that the Monster Raving Loony Party play”, he said.
The Party’s manifesto includes creating a Ministry of Information made up of the former directors of Cambridge Analytica, and appointing Noel Edmonds lead Brexit negotiator “because of his understanding of Deal or No Deal”.
Howling Laud Hope, Leader of the Monster Raving Loony Party, said that Lord Sandys hadn’t sought official approval from the party leadership but confirmed that they would support him.
The party currently have 32 candidates standing across the UK, with that number expected to rise to 40 by the election on 12 December.
“We’re a political party that’s on everybody’s side no matter what political persuasion they may be”, Howling Laud Hope said.
“We could very well topple the shadow cabinet – it could be a political mudslide”, he added.
