A man has been charged with the murder of a Holloway shopkeeper exactly a year after the incident.
Michael James, 30, from Ursula Mews, Finsbury Park, is accused of killing Ahmet Paytak as he tried to protect his son in his shop on Hornsey Road in March 2009.
It is believed that Mr Paytak, who lived in Islington with his three children, was caught in a dispute between rival groups after he was mistaken for another man of Turkish descent.
Two men pulled up on a motorbike outside Euro Wine and Food Store on 22 March last year as Mr Paytak smoked a cigarette in the doorway. One of the men, wearing a mask, entered the shop and shot Mr Paytak’s 21-year-old son, Huseyin, twice in the leg. Mr Paytak was shot once in the stomach by the gunman, who then fled the scene.
Mr Paytak later died in hospital. His son, Huseyin, recovered.
Mr James, who today will appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court, is charged with the murder of Mr Paytak, the attempted murder of his son and possession of a firearm with intent to commit an offence.
