Posh houses and luxury shops are detracting businesses from giving to the borough’s charities, a local organisation has warned.

Fundraising campaign Islington Giving claim that potential donators are flocking to east London, where they believe their money will be more useful – but 49 per cent of local children live in poverty.

“One of the things we’ve noticed is businesses don’t see Islington as a place of need,” spokesman Jackie Broadfield said. “They tend to look eastward to Hackney and Tower Hamlets where they feel the poverty problem is bigger.”

Speaking at the Responsible Business exhibition yesterday, she said: “Charities need to tell their story – about who they are, what they do and who they help.”

The exhibition, which was held at the Business Design Centre, attracted organisations such as Small Steps, which helps disabled children from Islington. Andrea Samuelson, a trustee of the charity, said: “We go to companies and put on disability awareness campaigns and drinks events.”
