Islington, which last month took itself to court over a parking ticket, has won a prize at the 2010 British Parking Awards.
The council’s car club scheme has won the BemroseBooth Enviroment award for its role in encouraging residents of the borough to give up their cars.
The scheme, Islington Streetcar, allows residents to hire cars for an hour, weekend or a month. Launched in 2006, within a year the scheme boasted over 1,000 members.
Talking about the scheme in 2007, councillor Lucy Watt, Executive member for Environment said:
“Streetcar reduces the number of cars on the road because many people can use them in one day – so they can help make Islington greener. If you don’t want the burden of car ownership, storage or maintenance, Streetcar, is perfect.”
The British Parking Awards, launched in 2002, are supported by the British Parking Association (BPA) and recognise good practice, management, design and enforcement of parking.
