Results of a poll revealed that most Islington residents are against Boris’ underground highway plan.
Of the 50 people asked, 34 said they were staunchly against it – with many expressing serious concern. Just five said they were not sure or had not made up their mind.
There were 11 people who said they were in favour of the idea. Most said they thought that there was enough traffic anyway which the new highway could help in relieving.
Boris Johnson has laid out plans to build a 22 mile long road tunnel across central London, costing £30 billion to construct. The project is expected to be concluded in 2050.
Here are the main reasons given by some Islington residents and other Londoners:
“For 30 billion pounds, they could be doing so much else. Investing in sustainable options, as non poluent ways of transportation, would be a better solution.” Emma Ward, Forest Hill, South East London
“An orbital tunnel will not be helpful to get to central London. It would be useful to go round the city and the A25 road already does that. What difference it would make?” Justin Selway, Mildmay, Islington
“Regardless the area, if it is going to be built in Islington or not, it is a good idea. Roads are just too congested. Other cities around the world, such as Paris, have an orbital solution like that.” Tom Ward, Islington resident
