Homeless people are to benefit from a Barnsbury pub’s fourth year of fundraising efforts during the festive season.
The Drapers Arms has raised around £4,000 in partnership with the charity StreetSmart since it opened four years ago.
Money for the homeless is raised by adding a voluntary £1 to each table’s bill during November and December, and people are free to contribute more if they wish.
The scheme, which runs across bars, restaurants and hotels throughout the country, is sponsored by Deutsche Bank, meaning 100 per cent of donations go directly to homeless charities in the UK. StreetSmart gave over £410,000 to London charities last year.
Nick Gibbs, manager of the pub, said: “There’s a dichotomy between how much we enjoy our food, and how spoilt we are to be able to eat and drink in the way that we do.
“So I think [we’re] just trying to bridge that gap a little. It’s just being part of the community around you.”
The Drapers Arms raises about £200 every week during the scheme, and in its four year history only two customers have ever declined to contribute.
Glenn Pougnet, Director of StreetSmart, said: “We think the Drapers Arms is absolutely wonderful for what it does, and it has raised thousands over the past few years.”
