A working men’s club that has endured since 1888 may be forced to close after an extension for planning permission for luxury housing to be built behind it was approved.
The Mildmay Club, which faces Newington Green, has a retro interior that has featured in films such as Made in Dagenham and Vera Drake.
The development could cause the social club to lose access to its carpark and rear right of way. Members say this would be a death knell for the club, as the back entrance is crucial for film crews and party hire, which provide essential income.
“Hackney Council promised to replace the right of way we’ve had for a hundred years,” said Mildmay’s event co-ordinator Brenda Brown. She explained that land owner Hanover was granted permission in 2008 to build six four-bed townhouses behind the club, providing that they relocate the back gate.
They heard no more about it until late last year, when Hanover sought an extension, which was granted by Hackney Council last month.
The promise of preserving access seems to have evaporated, and the club’s future could be in limbo for up to three years, as building or sale of the land can take place at any time.
“I’ve heard that the flats might sell for £1m each,” said Ms Brown, but added: “The locals value this club – we collected 375 signatures on a petition against the development…I want to do something but I’m powerless.”
The council declined to speak to Islington Now.
