An Islington resident has blasted chicken chain Nando’s over it’s “despicable” handling of allergies.

Twitter-user Jade visited a branch located on Upper Street last Friday and was appalled at the service she received.

“Your team’s allergy service is despicable” – Nando’s customer

She tweeted: “@NandosUK hey, I came to your Islington branch now and your team’s allergy service is despicable. I am allergic to eggs and nuts. Two people served me, neither put it through as an allergy order.”

The chain moved quickly to apologise to the customer, saying that it takes allergies seriously.

A spokesperson said: “We are sorry to hear that Jade didn’t receive the service that she was expecting while at our Islington restaurant.

Nando’s says takes allergy procedures “very seriously”

“We take our allergy procedures very seriously and the team have let her down in this instance.

“We urge anyone who has an allergy to ask to speak to the manager before placing their order.

“The manager can then take them through the menu specifications and process their order from start to finish to make sure that they receive a delicious Peri-Peri meal that is safe for them to eat.

“If anyone would like to research the menu before coming into a restaurant then all of the information is available on our Nando’s website and app.”

Fears follow after death of Pret customer in 2016

The incident comes after the case of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse hit the headlines. She suffered a fatal anaphylactic reaction to a Pret baguette, which did not have a food allergy sticker on it, in 2016.

The Guardian did a subsequent investigation in December 2018, during which Nando’s staff wrongly stated that a burger did not contain mustard when it did. The information was later corrected by the staff member.

Jade added: “Please do some allergy training with your team here. I didn’t want to complain to the manager after he clearly didn’t care when I told him about my allergies upon ordering.”
