Indie music fans are fighting to stop the closure of one of Islington’s most popular music venues, Buffalo Bar.

Almost 5,000 people have signed an e-petition to stop the closure of the bar after its landlords received notice.

Famous act such as The Libertines, Bloc Party and The Kooks have graced its stage since it opened 14 years ago.

The club said in a statement: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the imminent closure of the Buffalo Bar. We have been served a very short notice period from our new landlords, after being here for over 14 years.”

The petition called on the freeholders to rethink the closure plans. It described the bar as “one of London’s best-loved music venues”.

NME picture editor Emily Barker got behind the campaign, writing in Time Out: “The red basement was steeped in history. It garnered a reputation for hosting misfit artists that just didn’t seem to ‘fit’ anywhere else.”
