Islington Now rounds up some of the best arts, culture and International Women’s Day events going on in the borough this week.
Listen: KEG at the Lexington – 13th March
Hailing from Brighton, seven-piece KEG blend together elements of hip-hop, jazz and chaotic post-punk, creating a sound perfectly tailored to angsty teens and discontented idlers. Best known for their belter of a track ‘Kids’, the band are not afraid to take the mick out of, well, whatever they despise. With thrashing drums, cowbell intermissions, and flinty vocals, KEG are a band to watch – even just for one night.

Watch: Otherland at the Almeida Theatre – Until 15th March
Otherland, director Ann Yee’s adaptation of Chris Bush’s play, has been heralded by critics since it first came to the stage last month. We follow the lives of newlyweds Harry and Jo, who gradually distance from one another when Harry chooses to live as a woman. With only a week left on stage, be sure to grab tickets to this theatrical exploration of the transgender experience.

Grab your tote bag – it’s time to shop. The infamous Mildmay Club is opening its doors on Sunday for all you vintage lovers. With two halls of clothing and over 40 sellers, those in attendance will be spoilt for choice. Bops will be provided while you shop, courtesy of DJ Jonny Trunk, who is presenting the event. Whatever style you’re after, be it Americana, mod, or gnomecore – you name it, Mildmay has it.

Watch: Farewell Mister Haffmann at the Park Theatre – Until 12th April
Renowned as one of France’s longest-running plays, Farewell Mister Haffmann has won its fair share of awards over the years. This month, the Holocaust story arrived at the Islington’s Park Theatre, under the directorship of Oscar Toeman. Set in Paris during the height of WW2, the play shines a spotlight on the upturned life of Jewish jeweller Joseph Haffmann as he is forced into hiding with the help of his employee.

Fancy some food and artisan products by women’s businesses? Visit Islington Square for the International Women’s Day market, organised by Urban Food Fest and Women on Our Way, a London-based community for motivated and motivating women, working to build value-aligned careers. Upcycled fashion, sustainable jewellery, and Japanese wrapping (with live demonstration) are only some of what to expect at the market – plus a free beverage with each purchase you make.

London Herstory Guided Walks hits Islington for the first time
The eclipsed women in Islington’s history will be heralded on Mandy Morrow’s women’s history walking tour this women’s day. For three years, the popular Herstory tours have been held all over London, and a new tour in Islington will be inaugurated this Saturday, with the special participation of the council’s Deputy mayor. The tour will explore Canonbury and Angel between its squares and Georgian architecture, and afterwards, invites participants to mingle around a warm brew.
