Can’t decide between a dinner party or a night in a swanky restaurant? Supper Clubs may be the answer to all your foodie prayers.
The underground dining phenomenon first emerged in 2009, but in the last few years Supper Clubs have been popping up all over Islington.
As well as providing alternative means of fine dining, they also offer entrepreneurial locals the chance to make a bit of extra money on the side.
Starting out in disused warehouses, building sites and houseboats, it is thought that Supper Clubs, which allow people to eat out on a budget, initially became popular because of the recession.
But now Islington residents are opening the doors to kitchens and basements in their own homes as part of the Supper Club experience.
We’ve made a list of some of Islington’s finest.
Joginder’s Supper Club
Joginder’s is a mother and daughter owned Supper Club, which has been situated in a candlelit basement in Tufnell Park for the past five years. Rani and Saira Baker claim to bring North Indian food to North London with their range of punjabi cuisine. On their blog, the pair explain: “We love cooking, but don’t want a career doing it, and we don’t want to do it every night.
“Our supper club nights are done in the spirit of sharing and hospitality, and a love of good food.”
Malaysian by May Supper Club
As the first Malaysian Supper Club, May’s creation has been serving food for three years.
Although they are mainly based near Holloway Road, N7, the club also hosts a variety of pop-up events around the capital and recently hosted an event at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen and a sell-out pop-up at Oliver Peyton’s National Gallery Cafe.
The White Room Supper Club
Those who choose to eat at the White Room Supper Club will be treated to a four-course meal in a stylish apartment overlooking the sites of London.
The White Room Supper Club place an emphasis on meeting new people and place all diners around a single table to give maximum opportunity for conversation. Single parties are also told not to be afraid to book for one.
Clandestinos
Based in Finsbury Park, Clandestinos is one of London’s original Supper Clubs. It has just launched a new vegetarian Supper Club called Sweet Pea.
However, these small events only cater for a maximum of ten people. So, those wishing to try the exotic vegetarian dishes, such as tomato crumble and clementine posset, are advised to book early.
