Wine delivery service, Marcel the Wineman will begin operations again in around 10 days after a short break while improvements were made to the delivery app.
After learning that approximately 50% of glass is not recycled in the UK, independent wine merchant Made in Little France decided to create Marcel the Wineman to deliver wine in reusable glass bottles.
Just like a milkman, as a customer’s wine is delivered the old bottles are collected and taken back to the shop where they are cleaned and sterilised before being refilled with more wine.
“It’s the future of the table wine,” explained shop director Maxence Masurier: “It’s something very simple. It’s not a complex wine, it’s a party wine.”
Originally launching in October 2021, the wine delivery service sold around 200-300 bottles in just one month.
“It is really new. We are trying to launch it little by little to see how the market reacts. We took something very old, the milkman is an old institution, and turned it into something very modern and sustainable. The most important point for us is to be sustainable,” said Masurier.
Bottles are always collected so there is no waste and deliveries are made using an electric bike for a carbon neutral delivery.
Marcel the Wineman is also a less expensive way to purchase wine as, once you remove the price of the bottle and the label, the price drops. “Customers are able to have a bottle of wine delivered to their house for less than £10,” said Masurier.
Made in Little France is situated on St John Street in Clerkenwell, and Marcel the Wineman will be available all throughout Islington and Hackney.
