Archway resident “fears for his safety” after drunken fracas
A 24-year-old man was spared jail after pleading guilty to assaulting his mother and a passer-by in an alcohol-fuelled rage.
The court heard how Jamie McCloskey, of Kinver House, Archway, had been binge drinking on the fourth anniversary of his father’s death when the row with his mother erupted. As well as assaulting his mother, McCloskey also criminally damaged a wall, door and broom in her house.
After the fracas spilled onto the street, McCloskey headbutted a man who was trying to intervene. The court heard how Yingbo Liu was headbutted several times on the nose and now “fears for his safety” when he leaves his house.
He admitted to being a regular binge drinker and smoking “six or seven spliffs” daily. His honesty and remorse were used as mitigating factors by Judge Williams, who also praised his proactivity in having already enrolled on programmes to help control his substance abuse.
Judge Williams did, however, comment on how McCloskey went into a “totally unexplained frenzy” and that the attack on a member of the public was “very serious”.
There had been no application for a restraining order from McCloskey’s mother, so McCloskey was sentenced to a 12-month community order, which included an intense rehabilitation requirement of 15 days. He was ordered to pay Mr Liu £50 compensation before April 2 and has a tagged curfew from 7pm until 7am until April 30.
Deleted browser history lands Canonbury man on Sex Offender Registry
A 33-year-old man was found to be in breach of a Sexual Harm Protection Order after pleading guilty to deleting the internet browser history on his mobile phone.
Xiaojing Zhu, of Upper Lismore Walk, Canonbury, was required to sign the Sex Offender Registry in February 2018 after he was found in possession of indecent images of children. One of the terms of his probation for that offence was that he was prohibited from deleting the internet history on his mobile phone without reasonable excuse.
But when a probation officer asked to view his mobile phone last month they only found “a few days’ worth” of internet history and Zhu was subsequently arrested.
His case will be passed back to Blackfriars Crown Court for sentencing as Judge Williams ruled that her “powers of punishment are not sufficient”.
