Talking balls: Loving sport doesn’t mean loving football

If you love football, you cannot help but love Arsenal, or so we are always being told. That may well be true – especially if you’re turned on by nine dwarves trying to walk the ball towards Nicklas Bendtner so he can miss.

But if you love sport, you don’t necessarily love football, or Arsenal. And that’s especially true in Islington, where it can feel like it’s Arsenal or nothing – you’re either with us or without. This is frankly ridiculous. For lovers of sport in general – those addicted to the competition and aesthetic beauty and camaraderie – Islington sport merely begins with Arsenal.

There is a whole hidden map of weird and wonderful sports across the borough, from extreme Frisbee to weightlifting to underwater hockey.

So use this week to look beyond Arsene’s Arseshaving and take a look at something different. You won’t regret it.
