Members of the public have joined forces with council staff this week to clean up the streets of Holloway as part of the borough’s spring clean.

Kickstarted by the ‘Great British Spring Clean’ weekend run by the Keep Britain Tidy Campaign, the spring clean will move onto Finsbury Park, St Luke’s and Archway throughout March. Volunteers and workers will remove graffiti, litter pick and power-wash the streets.

Councillor Claudia Webbe, executive member for environment and transport, backed the effort and said: “This is about the community coming together. We all share Islington’s streets and town centres and feel passionately about keeping them clean.”

Fly-tipping has long been a problem in Islington and last year’s crack-down saw a number of fines issued for dumping at a new higher rate of £400.

Schoolchildren from Copenhagen School got stuck in on Tuesday as the initiative launched and helped pick up rubbish around their school on Treaty Street.

Green spaces as well as town centres will be spruced up during March. Cllr Webbe added: “We are committed to improving our environment for the benefit of everyone and hope to see everyone doing their bit for their borough.”
