A raised section of the cycle path to Moorfields Eye Hospital will be removed, following criticism from the visually-impaired.
The cycle lane on New North Road has led to concern from local campaign groups after being raised to pavement level.
Islington Councillor Paul Convery said: “I’ve cycled over it myself. It’s a bit bonkers. When we discovered it, straight away we said to take it out.”
He added that visually-impaired locals have raised concerns they will be mowed down by passing cyclists.
“It’s crazy. It basically runs through a bus stop. When I went through it a few weeks ago, I felt like I was mounting the pavement,“ Mr Convery continued.
The lane had been raised to pavement level so that buses would not impede cyclists. However, residents have told Mr Convery that cyclists are passing within inches off them when they disembark from the bus.
John Ackers from the Islington Cyclists’ Action Group said the group are “shrugging their shoulders in dismay” at the affair.
He said: “Raised cycle tracks can be very useful as part of a completely protected cycle route. But it’s bizarre to have a 10m section of raised cycle track next to a bus stop, and no stepped track anywhere else.
“At the time of the consultation we asked them to put stepped track along the whole route, from Essex Road to the Canal Bridge.”
Mr Convery added: “We trust our paid officials to make decisions on small projects, but the council have been left to take a close look over everything, which we shouldn’t have to do.”
