Step behind the gold velvet curtain of the vintage shop at 46 Essex Road, and into Islington’s latest pop-up gallery. The exhibition is artistic duo Sardine and Tobleroni’s homage to the punk-rock movement.
“The artists are interested in bad taste”, says the curator Debra Wilson. “They like to paint badly, and describe their practice as conceptual art brut – a visual equivalent of punk music.”
The paintings, grimy and uncompromising, are inspired by the album covers of bands such as Black Flag and Rancid. Arranged in a chronological grid that exist as one bold work with black lines that define each shape in a graffiti-like style. An interesting concept, delivered well.
