Take one ex-bassist from hit electropop band Metronomy, put him on stage, shove 300 people into a room made for 250 and you’ve got yourself a show – or possibly a North Korean gulag.
We’re in a Victorian warehouse-turned-venue called Electrowerkz, hidden just behind Angel station.
The room is so full that a crowd extends through the doors and into the hallway, forcing eager punters to tiptoe to see over heads bobbing to the chilled sounds from the stage.
This is Night Works – the stage name of electropop boffin, and Your Twenties graduate Gabriel Stebbing – and this is the launch of his album, Urban Heat Island.
Stebbing’s soft vocals over old-school Metronomy-style electrobeats screams Hot Chip, but chuck in some folk and rap at the end of ‘Share the Weather’ and you’ve got different beast altogether.
Think Hot Chip meets Alt-J.
