Islington youngsters are helping to boost businesses in the Angel by making a special app that will map out the area.
The students from City and Islington college have been working with the Angel Business Improvement District (BID), a scheme which helps local shops and restaurants by giving them services such as extra policing and litter collection.
Christine Lovett has been head of the Angel BID since it started in 2004. She is excited about the young people’s involvement with the local area.
“It’s an idea that we’re working on. The app will be available on smartphones. We’ve got students from City and Islington to map out the coordinates of all the businesses in the area,” she said.
“What we’re doing with the Town Centre app is identifying every single business in the BID area. It will be brilliant for visitors and anyone coming to the Angel to find out what’s going on.”
Students are going door-to-door to speak with business owners to find out information about every shop and restaurant which will then be put into the app.
The software used to build the app is cheap, so the project should not cost more than £1,200 itself.
“The details will be condensed. You’ll immediately be able to look up restaurants and shops with their addresses with other details,” Lovett added.
She also hopes it will be a valuable experience for the students: “All these skills will give them very good experience, and they will get a good reference which they can put on their CV.”
This is part of an initiative to bring more visitors and shoppers into the area. The BID has worked to make Angel a more pleasant place to visit and Lovett is proud of their record on crime reduction.
“We’ve cut crime here by 42 per cent, we have fantastic results in the daytime, our nighttime figures are a little high because of bag theft and mobile phone theft. It’s not violent crime, we very rarely have anything of that nature.
“We run a police team seven days a week, from 7am to 7pm and we’re slightly shifting that rota because of the nighttime economy, and that costs £400,000 a year.”
“We run a clean team, cycle rapid response team, anti-graffiti team, everything purple you see here is run by us and that costs £90,000 a year.”
Ms Lovett thinks the app will be a hit not just because of the students’ hard work but also because the Angel has such a unique character.
“it’s really quirky, it’s really different. You look at Camden Passage it’s so bespoke, there’s a feeling that you’re really somewhere special you have that gorgeous Georgian architecture, lovely small shops offering a kind of whole shopping experience. I think what Angel has can’t be reproduced anywhere else.”

I do not nderstand the love for Scott. He is 35 and has put up OPS of .703 and .724 the past 2 years while not having value on defense. I suppose he could come back to 2008-2010 levels but I would not want to bet on it.
