Islington Council is encouraging residents to get cycling this spring by pairing up with a free bike repair scheme.
Funded by national charity Cycling UK, Dr Bike is employing local mechanics to carry out free repairs to unloved and neglected bicycles in garden sheds.
Dr Bike, which makes up part of Cycling UK’s Big Bike Revival campaign, is part of a network of events that is encouraging “new and returning cyclists” to take to the roads, boosting fitness levels and taking cars off the streets. Since May, the scheme says it has fixed 3,059 bikes across the UK and helped approximately 4,000 key workers.
Though Dr Bike has been running since 2018, 2021 marks the first year the scheme has been run in London, with mechanics running “pop-up” drop-in sessions and timetabled events where bikes can be repaired, upgraded or even loaned out.
Although people are being asked to sign up via Eventbrite to ensure the events are Covid-compliant, the service provided is free and will operate until 17 March.
