A new mental health hospital is due to open next month after the North London Mental Health Partnership (NLMHP) handed over the facility.
The Highgate East Hospital is an £80m project that has taken over four years to complete.
The NLMHP is a joint partnership of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust and Camden and Islington NHS Foundation since April 2022.
As opposed to the most recent new-build extensions to hospitals serving Islington patients, the NHS has not had to rely on the Private Finance Initiative-style schemes as the hospital was funded by selling off parts of the old St Pancras Hospital.
The hospital has a 78-room in-patient facility and is situated next to the Whittington Hospital in Archway on the Camden, Haringey and Islington border.
The mental health inpatient services moving to Highgate East are currently based at St Pancras Hospital.
According to the NLMHP, the fully wheelchair-accessible hospital building has outdoor space from each ward, therapy spaces, and a sports hall along with a new community café.
Dr Vincent Kirchner, Chief Medical Officer, said: “The new hospital will make a difference. Having a therapeutic environment will mean people recover better, and will be more comfortable.
Nicky Baker, one of the service users who were involved in the design process, said: “Seeing the building brought a tear to her eye.”
