The Barbican will host a campaign for neurodivergent filmmakers during this year’s World Autism Acceptance Week.
The campaign – “See Us! Hear Us! Be the Change” – was launched last October by In Focus, a youth film project for up-and-coming neurodivergent filmmakers, and will be spreading awareness at the Barbican from 27 March to 2 April 2023.
In Focus aims to improve inclusion and diversity for neurodivergent creatives on and off-screen to make a positive change in the film industry. Neuro diverse conditions include autism, ADHD, dyslexia, Tourette’s and others.
In Focus facilitator, Conor Powell, said: “We want young people to see themselves positively reflected on screen and off screen know that there is a place for them in all parts of the film and creative industries.”
An In Focus member reflected on why the film group is important to him. He said: “Making films is fun, and it’s a great way to express yourself. I don’t get to do that often, so it’s a really nice experience.”
The In Focus Film project is part funded by the National Lottery, Hackney Council, and Tower Hamlets Council Tackling Poverty Fund.
