A bridesmaid has shaved off her hair to make a wedding day wig for her best friend, who is battling cancer.
Miffy Grubb, 29 donated her curly brown locks to raise money for charity and create a made-to-measure wig for Ellie Jeffery, also 29, who is marrying her fiancé Tom in June.
“I did it to support my friend and provide the hair for the wig, and also to show solidarity for her. It is an emotional, instinctive thing,” said Ms Grubb, who lives in Caledonian Road.
So far, she has raised £7,185 for Action Against Cancer, a charity that has been close to Ms Jeffery’s heart since she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010.
Ms Jeffery said: “I was really proud of her that she would do that for me and that she raised nearly £8,000 on her own. That is really good going.
“We’ve known each other since we were 23, and we’re both 29 now. We’re really close and she’s been through a lot of my chemotherapy with me.”
Ms Jeffery shaved her friend’s head last Monday in her Brixton bathroom.
“It took longer than a normal shave as we were needing to keep the hair for the wig, so had to cut in thin sections. It was fun, it’s always fun spending time together,” said Ms Grubb.
Even though Ms Jeffery generally wears a wig, her best friend has decided to keep her shaven head bare.
“I did buy a wig but I made the error of buying a cheap wig. It had a fringe to disguise where it hit the forehead,” explained Ms Grubb.
“I feel much more myself without it. It was sort of just a very boring brown bob and wasn’t very noteworthy. I would have felt more at home in a garish wig that was more obviously a wig. I’m just going for a Sinead O’Connor crop now.”
She added: “It’s a good excuse to try out all the other new hair styles that I haven’t done in the past.”
