Police followed a mentally ill man to his Finsbury Park hostel because they suspected he could be a suicide bomber, it has emerged.
Officers were alerted by a member of the public who had seen the man, wearing a barrister’s wig and with wires coming from his clothing, board an underground train at Green Park station.
When the man got off at Finsbury Park station, police followed him to the hostel, where he has a room.
The man, who is said to have an obsession with wiring, was then seen emerging from the unmarked hostel accompanied by two nurses.
The incident happened on February 8 but details were not disclosed until this week.
The Met Police and Camden and Islington NHS Trust have not released the name of the patient or the exact location of the house where he lives.
It was the first time police have deployed their new terrorism guidelines – known as Operation Andromeda – which were revised after the mistaken shooting of Brazilian electrician Jean Charles de Menezes, at Stockwell station in 2005.
