Father-of-three Mehmet Hassan, 56, was found dead in his bedroom by police who broke into his flat on Monday evening, following concerns from the victim’s family, according to the Metropolitan Police.

There were no signs of forced entry and Mr Hassan may have opened his front door voluntarily. But in order to access the victim’s apartment, the assailant or assailants would have had to pass a security door on the ground floor.

It is not known if anything is missing from the address, in Westcliffe House on Baxter Road, Canonbury, where he lived by himself.

Although it is currently unclear how long the body had been there, Mr Hassan was last seen by neighbours on Sunday at 7.30pm.

According to a friend, Mr Hassan “loved to play cards” and gained the nickname “snake eyes”. The regular poker player “used this [winnings] as his main income”. It is believed he won £3,000 the day he was killed, according to the Islington Gazette.

Lukas lives next door to the victim and spoke to him on Friday. He said: “Last time I saw him everything seemed okay. He was just chilled, he asked about my work.

“He never had any arguments, he was always happy. Everyone’s in shock.”

Identified locally as a Turkish Cypriot, he was close to his mother and family although he did not appear to receive many other visitors to his flat. It is believed his daughter rang the police after being concerned about his safety.

Those who knew him describe him as polite, smartly dressed and well-presented. His lean build prompted some of the neighbours to express concern over whether he would have been able to defend himself.

Neighbours also revealed the victim was known to occasionally smoke cannabis.

Sibelle Jaler and her mother, Julie Ibrahim, live a few doors down from the victims flat.

Jaler describes Mr Hassan as very welcoming. She said: “I didn’t see him that often, he really kept himself to himself. I’ve seen him like 15 or 20 times since we moved here in 2007.

“If I was outside smoking, he’d ask ‘you alright?’. Every time I saw him he was in a suit. He gave my friend a business card that said he was a barrister on it but he told my mum he does night shifts.

“He did seem like the type of guy to that would invite a stranger into his house. [A few months ago], a telephone [sales] guy came round and he said he had been invited in and had a bowl of soup and a chat with him [the victim].”

Tragic news

The casino Genting Poker London, where Mr Hassan was a regular, took to Facebook yesterday to issue a message of condolence:

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Partridge, of the Homicide and Major Crime Command, has said: “I would like to appeal to anyone who has seen any activity in and around this address to make contact with my officers. In particular I would like help from the public who can assist with the movements of the victim between 19.30hrs on Sunday (23 March) and shortly before police found the victim on Monday.”

There have been no arrests at this time.
