At least 30 hungry North Londoners jostle for a coveted spot inside the 1980s-themed interior of The Breakfast Club as I arrive dead on 12 o’clock for a lazy Saturday afternoon brunch. The queue spills out onto the trendy streets of Camden Passage; I grumpily join the end as I feel my stomach rumbling.
But half an hour later, and one perfectly cooked poached egg down, my confidence is restored in the Breakfast Club. Despite expecting a long wait, brunch is placed on the red and white checked tablecloth within 15 minutes of ordering. And whilst I opt for a pancake dripping in maple syrup, the staples of a great greasy spoon are all here: crisp bacon butties with lashings of ketchup and enormous fry- ups complete with black pudding and eggy bread.
But “like a dog is not just for Christmas, the BC [Breakfast Club] is not just for breakfast,” says the cafe’s website. And indeed burritos, wraps, burgers and salads are all available here too. Portions aren’t too large, but neither are prices, considering the prime Islington location.
